The release date of the live-action adaptation of "Yu Yu Hakusho" (Ghost Fighter) is December 14, 2023, Netflix announced.
Adapted from Yoshihiro Togashi's "Yu Yu Hakusho" manga, directed by Sho Tsukikawa and featuring a talented cast including Takumi Kitamura, Jun Shison, Shuhei Uesugi, and Kanata Hongo. The screenplay is by Tatsuro Mishima, with VFX supervision by Ryo Sakaguchi (Scanline VFX) and executive production by Kaata Sakamoto (Netflix). In association with THE SEVEN, the production is brought to life by ROBOT and produced by Netflix.
The story revolves around a juvenile delinquent, Yusuke Urameshi, who unexpectedly dies while saving a kid from a vehicle accident. The Spirit World gives him a second opportunity as a "Spirit Detective" after his death. Yusuke (Eugene in Ghost Fighter - Filipino version) defends humanity from otherworldly attacks and solves supernatural riddles. Yusuke fights demons and other supernatural opponents with his friends Yoko Kurama (Dennis), Jaganshi Hiei (Vincent), and Kazuma Kuwabara (Alfred), uncovering a wicked scheme to destroy the Spirit-Human balance.
The Ghost Fighter live-action series promises to "breathe new life into the story, and fans old and new can expect to encounter their favorite characters in ways that have never been seen before."
According to Netflix, they "took the same level of commitment to quality and authenticity" to produce "Yu Yu Hakusho" as they did to the live-action adaptation of "One Piece."
It took five years to complete the production. Netflix first announced it in 2020.
From 1990 until 1994, "Yu Yu Hakusho" was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. In 1992, the story was made into an anime series.
In 1999, the anime "Ghost Fighter" first aired on the GMA Network. The Tagalog dub of the anime contributed significantly to its popularity in the Philippines, and fans still love it for its nostalgia. The show's success got Filipino viewers interested in anime, making it a major element of the country's anime culture.
