Review: The Guest Room - Tasha Sylva - July 2023
Tess used to be close to her older sister Rosie, that was
until her sister started hiding things and pulling away from everyone from her
boyfriend and family. Then one day, Rosie tried to call Tess but she didn't
pick up and that night Rosie was found murdered. Her case has never been solved
and Tess has moved into her sister's apartment and is renting out her sister's
room as a guest room to earn some extra money. Tess has also got a job at the
art gallery, her sister worked at. It's like she is trying to live Rosie's life
instead of her own why does she have to be the girl who let her sister down and
the one whose sister died? Tess also has a habit of snooping through her guests''
items, sometimes she finds random things and other times nothing of interest.
Her latest guest Arran though, she has discovered has a journal. Throughout the
novel, Tess reads his journal and it looks like he is a bit of an obsessive
stalker and weirdo, except Tess doesn't see it that way. Soon she starts to
believe it's about her, that is until some of the clues point in a different
direction. She needs to know all about Arran's mysterious girl, but what
happens when that girl also goes missing? Is Arran a killer? Was he the one who
harmed her sister? The Guest Room had lots of twists and turns that kept
pulling readers in all different directions and it got me thinking, how well do
we or anyone know their neighbours? Are you brave enough to open your house to
a stranger? The Guest Room was Tasha Sylva's debut novel and a great domestic
thriller. I am now looking forward to reading more of her future titles.
